Open day in New Jersey
An interesting story from Pro Football Talk tells of mid-season try-outs for 14 players at one of NFL’s pre-season favorites and 2008 Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants. The team has now lost four straight games after winning the first five, and are looking at a struggle to even make the play-offs this season.
It could well be that the try-outs are just the management’s way of telling the players that it’s time to shape up, but the whole idea of bringing in players who no-one has signed (maybe because they just can’t cut it) is interesting.
Imagine if Premier League strugglers Liverpool were to do the same – where would they even go looking for players that are of high enough quality to give the present squad a scare? Not in England, that’s for sure. Maybe they could bring in a squadful of players from China. That might sell a few jerseys in Beijing. Maybe even improve the team.
